How Musicians can amke the best use of instagarm

Hello music lovers! So what do you wanna know today? Tss.. I know what the title says, lol. Come! Let me tell you how you can make the best use out of Instagram. With regards to building up your presence on social media, Instagram has turned out to be truly outstanding for promoting your music.

A few years ago, people’s first stop was Facebook for the Like. Presently it’s Instagram for the Follow. Studies have demonstrated that engagement on Instagram is 10 times higher than Facebook. Furthermore, the average engagement per post has developed by 416 percent, compared to two years ago.

For musicians, Instagram offers a place to not just promote their music, artwork, and post selfies. It also gives you a chance to make a self-curated visual content about their lives and personalities. Instagram Stories and Instagram Live, two ultimate features of Instagram, have given musicians yet another tool for broadcasting their lives and connecting with fans. Instagram is a photo/video (59 seconds long only) sharing platform and at least half of your phone’s space must be covered by your clicks.

Just like everyone else, you can post whatever you want on Instagram. It’s your account. You can post your everyday stuff and routine.

However, if you want to show what music means to you and get a fan following based on your music, you can post following thing:

  1. Performance video
  2. Jamming/Practice video
  3. Merchandise
  4. Music videos
  5. Behind the scenes
  6. Show/Gig announcement
  7. Photos from wherever you go (If that’s a place to show)
  8. Photos with whoever you meet (If you liked the person)
  9. And some personal stuff (Instagram audiences love to get an inside look into the lives of artists. Don’t know why)

With Instagram, you will need to find somewhat of a balance with posting. Posting too often can spam your fans’ feed and it’ll lead them to unfollow you, yet for the most part, the more active you can be, the speedier your account will develop.

Keeping that in mind, regardless of whether you have a cluster of photographs ready to be posted, it’s best to spread them out over a few days. Try posting once or twice per day depending on the amount of content you have.

Okay! Presently you know how Instagram can profit you and what you should post. . But what about the fans and fame? How can you get fans on Instagram? First of all let me tell you it is sort of… easy but honestly, it is also time consuming. But HEY!! It’s your desire to get famous. So you need to put time and energy into it unless you have a lot of money to spend on social media marketing agencies. Right?

The following are some ways that can help you get huge amounts of followers:

  1. Supported posts

Instagram Sponsored Posts, otherwise called “Influencer Marketing” is a way to promote a brand or personality through well-known Instagram accounts (ones with huge number of followers). So this way you can handpick some accounts which has a following of your target audience and DM them like “Hey, can you post this video/photo of mine?” They will ask for a fee to do so and this fee depends on their following, engagement rate and mood. So go out in the market of Instagram and try your luck.

  1. Instagram Ads

Instagram Ad is a platform to reach a larger and more targeted audience. You can run Instagram feed ads to appear right in the news feeds of the audiences you target, alongside normal Instagram posts. You could even use story feature, which is more effective, as your ad placement. Instagram ads are less expensive than sponsored ads but not more effective than the other.

  1. Feature pages

There are a lot of Instagram accounts which feature musicians (instrumentalists and singers). Those with less than 5000 followers may not ask you for a fee but the ones with more than may do so. Eventually, it depends on them, totally, if and how much they charge. Just for the record, MELODY4PURPOSE’s Instagram account does the same. Follow and DM when you’re done reading this article.

  1. Follow/Unfollow method

Another way to get followers is by following people who are in the same niche to increase the odds that they follow you back. Of course, you can’t follow too many people at a time or you risk getting your account shut down by Instagram. Set up a schedule and stick to it.

You can find this audience in the followers list of those whose accounts are similar to yours. After a few days, start going back through the list of people you follow and unfollow them. You might choose to unfollow everyone except the accounts you really love, or you might choose to just unfollow the people who never followed you back.

Note: Currently, Instagram only lets you follow 200-220 other users in a day and 7500 followers in total at once.

  1. Cross-Promote Your Instagram Posts (Share for Shares)

One of the hands-down most effective ways we’ve used to grow our following on Instagram for free is through “share for shares”.

This is when you identify similar accounts that reach the audience you want to reach (and vice versa) and you both post a Call to Action post to follow the other account.

When sharing a photo on Instagram, share the post to your Facebook, Twitter, and other social media accounts inviting people to follow you. You can take the initiative by texting the account you want get promoted through like “Hey! I see that we are in a similar niche. Do you wanna do S4S/Share for Share?”

Some other things to keep in mind

  1. Set Up Your Profile

Your profile must look great or your visitors might not turn into followers. To make that happen you can post awesome content, set a professional or good looking Display Picture, write a 150-character-limited  bio that describes you best, use emojis and you could even post content based on your theme (if that’s your thing)

  1. Engage With Your Fans/Followers

Best way to engage with your fans is by liking and commenting randomly on posts in which you’ve been tagged. You could use your captions to prompt discussion. Participate in your comment threads or maybe run contests/campaigns. Engagement is the key to make your followers stay your followers & not unfollow you.

  1. Use the Right Hashtags

Think of hashtags that represent both; your image and what your fans are searching for on Instagram. Use an analytics tool such as Iconosquare to see which hashtags are popular among your fans. Switch out your hashtags every few months to keep them fresh and correlate with your fans’ interests.

  1. Post consistently

Along with having a consistent theme, you also need to be consistent in your posting. Consistency can help you in building your followers over time. Sporadic posting could actually cause you to lose followers. Post to your page one to three times a day. Create some of your posts and schedule them ahead of time with apps such as Hootsuite and Later to stay on top of your social game.

  1. Post at the right times

In order to receive the most engagement, you must post your content at the right times. Post your content morning, afternoon, and evening to reach your fans in different time zones. Use Iconosquare to analyze when your followers are online. Study your followers’ behavior for at least a month and make adjustments to your posting times based on your findings.

Ffww…. That all I have to say for now. Hope I have helped you through my knowledge. If you have any doubt, suggestion or feedback; you can post that in the comment section or you can even email me. I’ll be more than happy to hear from you.
