Arijit Singh’s Rise (Success Story)

He has a pleasant voice, he can make you cry easily, he can sing really high effortlessly and blah blah blah… words can’t describe much about him but words can surely tell you what you are here to know. We all know that Arijit has made his mark in Bollywood but not all of us know how he exactly did that. So without wasting any more time of yours, here is his success story.

 

Arijit Singh birthday falls on 25th April and he was born in the year 1987. He was born and brought up in Murshidabad in West Bengal, India. Arijit Singh family hails from West Bengal. He was born to a Punjabi father and a Bengali mother. Arijit Singh father was an LIC agent and mother is a homemaker. His grandmother, mother, and sister are trained singers. This is the place he got his inspiration for singing. He started his underlying preparing in music from his maternal grandma and mother. Arijit Singh mother additionally used to play tabla. Arijit Singh parents always stood by him and supported him to pursue his passion as the whole family was inclined towards music.

 

Arijit Singh completed his schooling from Raja Bijay Singh High School and his college from Sripat Singh College. He got himself trained in Indian classical music by Rajendra Prasad Hazari. He also learned tabla from Dhirendra Prasad Hazari while Birendra Prasad Hazari taught him Rabindra sangeet and pop music.

While he was just 17, when he was about to start his college days, he took part in a Television singing reality series ‘Fame Gurukul’ insisted by his guru Rajendra Singh Hazari. He did pretty well being in the top 6 but unfortunately could not win the show. Amid the show, movie producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali perceived his ability and influenced him to sing “Yun Shabnami” a tune planned to be utilized as a part of his then-up and coming film Saawariya. However, during the filmmaking process as the film script changed the song was no longer required and it was never released. Similarly after the show Fame Gurukul, ‘Kumar Taurani’ the head of Tips recognised his potential and talent and signed him for an Album. However the album was never released.

 

After Fame Gurukul, he participated in another reality show 10 Ke 10 Le Gaye Dil, which he won. He settle at Mumbai in the year 2006 and chose to work independently, remaining in a leased room in the Lokhandwala region of Mumbai. He invested the prize money of “10 ke 10 Le Gaye Dil” show in building his own recording studio, where he started composing the music and singing pieces for advertisements, news channels and radio stations. It was at that time that he, lacking any opportunities at singing, decided to become a Music Producer. Subsequently, Arijit spent a part of his early musical career as a Music Programmer and Music Producer to music directors like Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Vishal-Shekhar, Mithoon, Monty Sharma and Pritam. According to him helping Music Directors was the main path for him to get by in a city like Mumbai. While working with other composers he used to supervise the vocals, chorus section etc. but it was while working with Pritam, that he started to produce and programme music by himself. He sang his first song ‘All For One’ for ‘High School Musical 2’ composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy. He had also lent his voice for some of the popular television dramas.

 

 

Arijit’s debut as a singer in the indian films came at the Telugu Film Industry with the film Kedi with the song “Neeve Na Neeve Na” the music was composed by Sandeep Chowta. In 2011, Singh made his Bollywood music debut with the Mithoon-composition, “Phir Mohabbat” from Murder 2, which though recorded in 2009 was released in 2011. The same year, when he was programming for the song “Raabta” from Agent Vinod (2012), Pritam asked him to sing as well. The part was retained in all four versions of the song, and he was made to sing the entire composition in one of the versions. Apart from Agent Vinod, Arijit dubbed for Pritam in three other films released during the year: Players, Cocktail and Barfi!

 

 

Arijit’s major breakthrough came in the Aashiqui 2 where he was a lead and key vocalist and got prominence with the release of the song “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashiqui 2 (2013). The song fetched him several awards and nominations including Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer.

 

And after that we all know that he has worked with most of the music directors, showing his abilities in unexpected genres from classic to pop to EDM and what not, he lent his voice to a lot of songs. Gone are the days when it was hard for him to get work, he charges around 13 lac per song in a movie today and around 1 crore for a show/concert.

  • He doesn’t like limelight and paparazzi and rarely gives any interviews. He has had his share of controversies. He reported that the underworld don Ravi Poojary had threatened him and asked for a ransom of Rs.5 crores but Arijit did not file any complaint with the police. He was also arrested for assaulting a journalist. In 2016 he had a spat with Salman Khan and has publicly apologized to Salman.
  • Apart from being a singer, he is a documentary film maker, plays Badminton and is an avid writer and movie freak.
  • He was previously married to Koyal Singh whom he divorced. Arijit married Koel Roy, his childhood friend in Tarapith temple, West Bengal on 20 January 2014.
